Campfire Cheese Toasties Recipe

As the cool winter nights begin to stretch out into longer daylight, we know those backyard fire pits are calling. There’s something so grounding about gathering around a fire to cook. Something ancient. Something slow.

We do it all the time at Forest School. So, over the next few weeks, we’re bringing that magic to your inbox with a new mini-series called Friday Feasts. Simple “snack on a stick” ideas to inspire your weekend fire-side meals.

We’re kicking things off with something super easy, fun, and surprisingly satisfying: Campfire Cheese Toasties… on a stick.

Campfire Cheese Toasties (on a Stick)

Instead of using a jaffle iron, this version keeps little hands busy and invites a bit of good old-fashioned delayed gratification. Something we don’t often get in today’s world of instant everything.

If it feels right for your child, invite them to help make and cut their own sandwich. It’s a lovely opportunity to offer a bit more autonomy and ownership over the process.

You’ll need:

  • Bread (your favourite kind)

  • Sliced cheese

  • Butter (for the inside of the sandwich)

  • Optional extras: ham and cherry tomatoes

What to do:

  1. Make a simple cheese sandwich. Butter the inside to prevent drying out.

  2. Cut the sandwich into quarters. Squares work best.

  3. Thread one quarter onto a stick.

  4. Toast over a campfire until golden and melty.

  5. Enjoy and then start the next quarter for toasting.

Ways to fancy it up:

  • Add ham to your sandwich, and top each stick with a cherry tomato to blister over the fire.

  • For the foodies: Use raisin bread, swap butter for onion jam, and add sliced cheese. So fancy, so good!

You could use a jaffle iron. But where’s the fun in that? This is all about the sizzle, the smell, the slow toast, the giggles, the first bite.

It’s the joy of doing, not just the eating.
